REACH Regulation
The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation 1907/2006 aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.
Background
The REACH Regulation 1907/2006 aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.

This is done by the four processes of REACH, namely the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals. As a chemical, iodine also falls under the scope of the REACH Regulation and is thereby affected by its provisions.

The Communication identified several shortcomings that hamper the achievement of REACH objectives. Companies do not have enough incentives to update their registration dossiers. There is also a lack of coherence across chemical-related EU legislation.
In response to the issues identified, the European Commission's Communication lists 16 actions to improve the effectiveness of the REACH Regulation, among which: Improve evaluation procedures; Safety Data Sheets; Track substances of concern in supply chains; Promote the substitution of substances of very high concern; Simplified authorisation process; Application of principle; Interface REACH and safety and health legislation.
Impact on the iodine sector
Any change to the standards regulating the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals could cause additional adaptation costs to the iodine industry. If iodine is classified as an endocrine disruptor within the REACH Regulation, this could lead to several negative impacts on the sector.
